1. At the Shelter
Bather Bathe animals to get them ready for off-site events or adopt-a-pet booths. Can also bathe just about anytime to make the animals look and feel better, weather permitting.
Socializer Spend time with the animals giving them one-on-one attention at the shelter. Walk the dogs in our yard or play with the cats in one of our Get-Acquainted Rooms. There are hundreds of animals who would love to spend time with you. Not surprisingly, this is our most popular volunteer opportunity.
Greeter Primarily on weekends. Greet potential adopters as they arrive at HHHS and direct them to the appropriate staff person for questions they may have.
3. Off-Site Events (Adopt-a-Pet booths)
Supervisor Responsible for transporting animals to and from off-site events. Also responsible for the animals and volunteers at off-site events. This person is a representative of HHHS and must be over 18 years of age and very responsible. Requires additional training and a monthly commitment.
Showcaser Must be over 16 years of age and responsible. Each volunteer will be responsible for handling an animal at the event and will talk with potential adopters about the animals. Information about the animals will be provided.
3. Special Events
A. Lawn & Garden Show Volunteers are needed each day to showcase animals for adoption. This indoor event is held at the Expocentre in February. Retail, fundraising and Showcaser positions available.
B. Bone Appetit Volunteers are needed to assist with event set-up/tear down, registration, setting up the silent auction and walking animals in the pet parade.
C. Paws in the Park There are a variety of jobs at this annual event held in September. We need help setting up and tearing down. This requires early morning arrival and staying after the event to make sure everything is loaded and clean.
Rent-A-Dog-Booth (Paws in the Park) HHHS offers animals for rental at Paws in the Park. We need volunteers to run the booth and help take care of the animals during the event. Volunteers will collect money and identification from renters. Pancake Feed (Paws in the Park) We need people to help serve food, clean the area and collect money.
Pre-Party (Paws in the Park) Volunteers help set up before the event and clean up afterwards. Also need people to serve food, help with registration and distribute bags and t-shirts.
Silent Auction (Paws in the Park & Bone Appetit) Volunteers help set up and monitor the auction. Volunteers must stay until auction is over and all items have been picked up and paid for.
Retail Booth (Paws in the Park & other off-site events) Volunteers help set up and tear down the booth and collect money for items sold.
Volunteer Table (Paws in the Park) Volunteers working at this table must arrive before event. Assist other volunteers with sign-in and nametags. As volunteers arrive, direct them to their assigned areas. Answer questions direct volunteer “floaters” to appropriate areas to cover for breaks and extra help when needed.
Greeter (Paws in the Park) Volunteer will be available early to help direct (by way of map) vendors arriving to set up their booths.
4. Other Activities
A. Foster Parent Foster our animals in your own home. Pets considered for foster care include adoptable ones waiting for a permanent home. There is also a special need for foster homes for animals with health issues, nursing mothers with litters, and babies without mothers. Foster parents must be licensed by the State of Kansas. Call HHHS at 785.233.7325 to learn how you can obtain a license and become a foster parent.
B. FundraisingProjects done on your own where proceeds are donated to HHHS. These projects could consist of bake sales, garage sales or anything else that could generate funds for HHHS. The limits are endles - be creative! Any questions should be addressed to the Volunteer Coordinator, Jayme Walshire, at 785.233.7325 or by email at jaymew@hhhstopeka.org.
*Note: Volunteer work cannot be counted toward or used to fill court ordered community service hours. You must contact Yvonne or Nikki to schedule work, call 785.233.7325. You must be 18 years old to perform community service hours at our shelter. |
